Earlier tonight I hung out with a friend that I don’t hang out with all the time. Among other concerning things he told me, he told me that his dream car is a 2016 toyota camry.
I understand where he’s coming from since his current car is a ‘98 camry, and his house is 100% toyota... But does my friend have to aspire just getting a new camry? At least dream about an Avalon!
As car guys, we probably know what we would buy for the price of a base camry. I’d buy an FR-S.

Is he dumb?
I’d buy an aw11 MR2 and a FX-16 with the money he’d put down for a shitty Camry. There you go, you got your exotic sports car and a practical hot hatchback.

My Local dealership has a maroon colored Avalon, on black wheels that actually look sick. Like this but a dark maroon, almost purple color.
Oh found one that color is SIZZLING CRIMSON MICA

Thing is, the Camry (if it’s a V6, though maybe even the I4) would smoke both of those, even on a track.
Also, Camry’s are pretty nice, even if they are a little boring. Far from being shitty.

Come on dude...you should know better. Smoking on a track is fine by me. It has more horsepower and more rubber on its wheels, so that is a given. It drives like a fridge though. That’s what matters. That’s what is shitty.

If you’re going to aspire for new Toyota, aspire for something nice, like a Lexus LS or maybe an RC F or GS F.

Say what you will, but the current Avalon is a fantastic-looking car.

Yeah it’s kinda crazy that the top model, besides the Hybrid, has black wheels too.

To be honest, I don’t know how we graduated from the same college.
How does a aw11 mr2 compare to the zzw30? Because I’ve driven the zzw30 before and it was really fun to drive even though I was just using it in town.

I used to work for a toyota dealer. Camry’s were good cars...but that was about it. My boss was a big car guy who liked all brands, and he would probably say something if a salesman parked a camry in front of his desk.

The V6 will smoke the tires if you launch it. It will also handle jumps pretty well, and can get beached on a speed bump when fully loaded with 6 people and a trunk you’ll of stuff. Oh and it will *allegedly* top out at ~130mph (governed at 145, but it would require perfect conditions to get it there). My friends mother had a 2008ish that he would always borrow, you see. That’s pretty much all you need to know to draw your own conclusion.

Art or humanities major probably. :D
AW11 definitely will be better in terms of driving feel and thrill. The ZZW30 will be better in numbers and stats of course. But that’s like with any old car vs new car comparison. I’ll take the car with no P/S, no ABS, no power windows, maybe no AC but with a high-revving engine and a slick manual. The ZZW30 has a lot of going for it though even if it isn’t as good as the AW11. First of all, it will be more reliable due to age. It will be faster, if that matters to you. It is actually lighter than the AW11 so it will handle even better. Plus it has a quick n easy soft top. Styling is subjective. The engine even though it has more HP than the AW11, is an eco, low stress engine. It sounds meh, and feels meh.

Ironically he’s a statistics major. But I do know Humanities majors that make me question my school’s admissions process.
I feel like in my case the ZZW30 works best for me, because even though an MR2 would be a second car I’d still like to have power everything and an ECU that’s OBD II compatible. I wish I got to drive an AW11 while I was a valet, but going off what people say about the early MR2's i understand why owners never valet their AW11's.

I have like three separate dreams ranging anything from like garages with:
1.) Ferrari FF, G63, F40.
2.) Cayenne, Panamera, Cayman, Boxster (entire family including kids.)
3.) But in my most realistic world, it’s just a silver Camry XSE, a Sienna for the wife and a Corolla and FR-S for my two imaginary kids.
For some reason, the F40 dream, I don’t have kids.

To be fair, the inside of a new Camry is a nice place to be. Especially the SE with the blue/black two-tone interior.

To be fair, if I won the lottery, I’d buy a loaded 2016 Avalon as a daily...... And then build a 2-story garage and fill it with all the cars I actually want . haha

Dream #1: you could have a decent youtube channel and instagram account with that garage.
dream #2: maybe exchange a boxster for a 911 convertible? if you hold onto a 911 for decades it will eventually go up in value? (996 models being the exception)
dream #3: buy the most expensive sienna with radar cruise control and all wheel drive.

The all new Uber-valon! Only problem is I’d still be miffed when the ‘businessmen’ trash my interior...

HAHAHA. I know that Lexus is part of Toyota. I just have no intention of putting Lexus on there and I’m going full regular Toyota family or well off Porsche family. Love the LFA though.

Yeah. I’m like 21 right now and I’m planning for this to be my garages when I’m like 45. Panamera for me. Cayenne for my wife. Like a black with gray wheels Cayman for my daughter who I’ve always dreamed would be a tomboy. And then a Boxster Spyder for my son.
I’ve got this thing like WAY TOO THOUGHT OUT.

Get the early model year ZZW30 then. It still has the least safety bloat and uses a cable throttle and is OBDII.
AW11 was made during the best automotive years though so in terms of driver engagement, it will never be beat by anything modern. Same era as the E30, NA Miata, and Japanese GT car war. It was a time when technology was applied to better power and chassis dynamics without going into electronic driver aids and safety bloat.

I mean on paper, there’s nothing inherently wrong with the Camry. With the V6 it’s listed as 21/31 MPG (24 as tested by Car & Driver) while producing 268hp. With a less than 2 ton curb weight it’s gets 0-60 times of 5.8sec and a quarter mile of 14.3 at 100mph. It has all the creature comforts one could ask for, including possible Nav, leather, radar cruise, power everything, plenty of cup holders, AUX and USB inputs, even an option for a JBL sound system. Again, on paper, it’s a respectable family hauler. Off paper, the styling is in-offensive - nothing inherently wrong there either.
The problem is just that it’s not “interesting” to most car people. What makes a car “interesting” are generally quirks, but quirks don’t sell to the general non-enthusiast population.
And to aspire for a Camry... it’s like aspiring for mediocracy. Again, nothing inherently wrong with that.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that without the boring there would be nothing to pull down the standards so that something else would stand out as exceptional.
